NY State Scholarships for Academic Excellence 
  provide up to $1,500 per year for up to five years of undergraduate study in New York State. There will be one students receiving $1,500 and two students receiving $500.

Students must:


  • Have graduated from a New York State high school
  • Study full time and be matriculated in an approved undergraduate program of studyin a New York State post secondary institution

  • Not be in default on any State or federal student loan or on any repayment of state awards
  • Be U.S. citizens or qualifying noncitizens
  • Be New York State residents

How are students nominated/awarded?

   Guidance Counselor does calculations based on Regents Exam scores and submits name of winners to the state by February 15th.


DCS uses Method A (Regents test scores) 
   The high school shall select their winner(s) by computing a weighted average of the scores on the Regents examinations and/or approved alternative assessments taken by its students prior to their senior year, in all of the following subjects: The weighing of the scores shall be: Comprehensive English - weight of three,
Algebra 2 & Trigonometry - weight of three,
Global History - weight of one,  
U.S. history/government - weight of one,
Science: At least two, but up to four courses may be included - weight of one for each course


NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Scholarship
   The NYS STEM Incentive Program provides a full SUNY tuition scholarship to thetop 10 percent of students in each NYS high school if they pursue a STEM degree in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program and agree to live in NYS and work in a STEM field in NYS for five years after graduation.    Deadline: 8/15.

How to Apply

Complete and submit the NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program Application. Be sure to print the Application Confirmation, sign and submit it, along with the required documentation, according to the instructions.

The deadline for submitting the NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program Application is August 15, 2017.

$1,000. Award - Student planning to attend the Marion S. Whelan School of Nursing or another nursing school.  Must have an 80 grade point average or above.  Application, including short answer essay questions, copy of your transcript, two references from community members and one reference of a faculty member.  Must be postmarked by Friday, April 14th.

FREE TUITION???  (SUNY Scholarships)

   The following is some preliminary infromation on the newly approved free tuiton (Excelsior Scholarship) for SUNY two and four year colleges and how the “Enhanced Tuition Awards Program”  may also be used for NYS private colleges.  More information will be provided when applications become available. See my Guidance Office webpage (“Scholarships”) on the DCS website for up to date information and links to websites on these programs.  Students/parents can go to the websites below to sign up for informational  e-mails from the state.


***Excelsior Scholarship (For SUNY colleges)***

Will I be able to attend college at SUNY or CUNY tuition free?

Yes. If you are a NYS resident whose family household adjusted gross income (as filed on your 2015 federal tax returns) does not exceed $100,000 for the 2017-18 academic year and you complete 30 credits per year, you will be able to attend a SUNY or CUNY college tuition free.


How much can I receive from the Excelsior Scholarship?

An Excelsior Scholarship recipient can receive up to $5,500 from the Excelsior Scholarship, minus any amounts received for TAP, Pell or other scholarships. The remainder of your tuition charge will be covered through a tuition credit paid through SUNY or CUNY.


Will I be able to get an award for the fall?

Yes. Eligible students will receive awards to attend a SUNY or CUNY college tuition free this fall.


When will I be able to apply for the award?

It is anticipated that the Excelsior Scholarship application will be available June 7th. You can register to be contacted as soon as it becomes available at


***Enhanced Tuition Award (for PRIVATE COLLEGES in New York State)***

What is the Enhanced Tuition Awards Program?

The Enhanced Tuition Awards program provides tuition awards to students attending a private college located in New York State.


How much can I receive from the Enhanced Tuition Awards (ETA) Program?

An Enhanced Tuition Awards recipient can receive up to $6,000 through a combination of their TAP award, ETA award and a match from their private college. For example, a student who receives a $1,000 TAP award would receive an additional $5,000 – half of which would be paid by the ETA and half by his or her college.


Will I be able to get an award for the fall?

Yes. Eligible students will receive Enhanced Tuition Awards this fall provided their college has opted to participate in the program.


When will I be able to apply for the award?

It is anticipated that the Enhanced Tuition Award application will be available in late May. However, you can register to be contacted as soon as it becomes available at


How much income can my family earn to be eligible for an award?

For the 2017-18 academic year, your household adjusted gross income can total up to $100,000 to be eligible. For 2018-19, that amount increases to $110,000, and beginning in 2019-20 and beyond, your family’s adjusted gross income can total up to $125,000.
